I am a physician, author, teacher and software engineer. At the moment, I'm retired/on sabbatical/my own boss.

Academic anesthesiology is the best job on the planet. I get to save lives and relieve pain. Not only that, I get to teach others how to do it. I like working with resident physicians and taking care of patients, and I still work in the OR a few days per month.

Over the years, I have taught calculus, chemistry, physics, computer programming, medicine, small group teaching, education technology, mountaineering, soccer, positive coaching, and leadership. I've been an assistant dean and a residency program director. I've helped build a large, comprehensive, state-of-the-art medical simulation center. I have given talks at the American Society of Anesthesiologists many times, and I chaired a panel at the World Congress of Anesthesiologists.

I've written more than a dozen interactive books. With the generosity of Keith Ruskin, Charlotte Bell and René Hagenouw, I was a director of GASNet, one of the most successful medical Web sites. At its peak, 90% of anesthesiologists in the United States used GASNet. My tutorial on airway management was the most popular content on GASNet. My most recent book is a tutorial on sedation for non-anesthesiologist physicians with an accompanying differential equation based pharmacokinetics and physiology simulation program.

I am also a software engineer. I am an early adopter of object-oriented programming, software design patterns and agile methods.  Most of my software is cross-platform. I supervised large software projects for the UC Davis Health System. I've been an Apple Developer for 25 years, and I am currently writing applications for iPhone and iPad.

I've co-founded two tech companies and served on the board of two non-profit corporations. I'm a nationally certified soccer coach. I love reading, cooking, soccer, sailing, hiking, climbing and photography.
